Clayton County Register, 23 Nov. 1938.
Frank L. Hochhaus died at his home here in Elkader yesterday afternoon as the result of a stroke suffered a week ago today, though he had been in failing health for about two years. The death of his wife, less than four months ago, no doubt hastened his death.
Frank Ludwig Hochhaus, who was born on November 21, 1861, in Cox Creek township, reached the age of 77 years and one day. He was the son of Fred and Ottilie (Dubrowsky) Hochhaus. He received his only education in the rural schools of this county, which he attended during the winter months, and he spent the major part of his life in Cox Creek and Boardman townships, except for a short time, as a young man, when he lived in Kansas.
December 09, 1888, in Clayton Center, he was united in marriage with Mary Witt. She preceded him in death, August 08, this year. Two sons were born to this union, Arthur F. W., and George J., both of this place, who survive, together with one granddaughter, Dorathee Hochhaus, and one sister, Mrs. Chas. Peick.
The major part of Mr. Hochhaus' life was spent on the farm, but even after he retired to Elkader in the spring of 1919, he spent much of his time in his garden and the care of his cows, as long as his health and strength would permit.
He was a charter member of Frieden's Evangelical church here, and was a regular attendant at services at every opportunity.
Death has struck four times in this relationship in less than four months. On August 08, Mrs. Hochhaus was "called home"; next, a brother, Fred Hochhaus, died near Edgewood; November 03, death took Chas. Peick, brother-in-law of the deceased.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and at 2:00 in the Evangelical church, with the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating. Casketbearers will be six nephews, H. J. Conrad, Milton Uecker, Max Opitz, Jr., Chas. Bauer and Raymond and Roy Hochhaus. Burial will be made in the East Side cemetery.
