VOLGA: Mary Ellen Yearous, daughter of Jacob and Rebecca Yearous, was born Sept. 06, 1885, on a farm in Highland township, Clayton county, near Volga City, and departed this life on June 28, 1938, at the age of 53 years, nine months and 16 days. Here she grew to womanhood and later the family moved to West Union.
At the age of 18 years, she began teaching. On June 30, 1910, she was united in marriage to Ira Moore, second son of the late Rev. Jasper and Mary Moore. To this union were born seven children: William, Ira Jr., Ronald, Evelyn, Jasper, Rebecca and Ethel, all residents of Volga.
She had been ill for several years and was taken to the University hospital at Iowa City, Dec. 17, 1937. On January 17, 1938, she underwent a serious operation and returned to her home in Volga, Feb. 07, 1938. Her health seemed to be improving until about a month ago, when she went to bed and remained there until her death.
She leaves to mourn, besides her husband and immediate family, her father and mother, four brothers, five sisters, three daughters-in-law, three grandchildren and a host of friends and other relatives.
Her funeral was held Thursday, June 30, at 2:30 o'clock, at the Methodist Episcopal church, Rev. E. J. Starr, pastor, officiating. Her casket bearers were: Willian Hoskyn, Jesse Sloan, William Chase, Frank Oldfather, John Follon and Eneas Voshell. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery.
