Clayton County Register, 10 Nov. 1937.
EDGEWOOD: Clair Stalnaker, 32, son of Earl Stalnaker, died Monday afternoon at five o'clock, following a skull fracture received an hour earlier when he was struck by a car driven by Louis York, a Chicago sign painter.
York was going east toward Dubuque. At a point about three miles east of Edgewood, coming over a rise in the road, the driver saw a man and a child on the highway, walking toward him. York sounded the horn on his car and the boy jumped, but Stalnaker failed to respond to the alarm and he was hit in the leg and thrown into the windshield where his skull was fractured.
York, it is claimed, swerved his car in an effort to miss the victim. Stalnaker was taken to an Edgewood doctor's office for treatment, and later the body was taken to the Franklin funeral rooms in Strawberry Point.
The dead man is survived by his father, four brothers, Clarence of Unity, Ore., Carl of Volga, Eugene of near Strawberry Point, and Martin at McGregor. One sister, Miss Ella Stalnaker of near Strawberry Point, also remains. The deceased is a nephew of Dr. F. H. Stalnaker, Edgewood veterinarian.
