Clayton County Register, 14 October 1936.
Mrs. Jeff Harbaugh, nee Edith M. Hansel, was born near Garber, Iowa, Dec. 27, 1874, being a daughter of Strother and Sophronia Hansel. At the age of 16 she was baptized by her father according to the Dunkard faith.
On Sept. 07, 1891, she was united in marriage with Mr. Jeff Harbaugh in Elkader. This union has proven to be a happy, faithful one of 45 years duration. During that time their home was gladdened by the birth of nine children, of which one son, Ernest, preceded his mother in death. The surviving children are: Mrs. Mahalia Ridenour of Manchester; Mrs. Jesse Elledge of Colesburg Mrs. Edith Thein of near Garber; Ezra, Leon, Malcom, Murray, and Wayman Harbaugh, all of near Garber.
In November, 1935, Mrs. Harbaugh was removed to a hospital in Elkader, to determine the nature of her illness. It was found to be of such seriousness that further treatment there was declared to be in vain, and she was returned to her home, where she patiently bore long months of untold suffering. Her husband and family gave her every comfort they could, until she passed peacefully to her Father in heaven, in whom she had such serene faith during her life. She attained the age of 61 years, eight months and 19 days.
In addition to her husband and children, those who mourn her passing are three sisters, two brothers and a host of relatives and friends. Her sisters are: Mrs. Sam Smith of Garber, Mrs. D. W. Bowman of Toledo, and Mrs. John Gull of Osterdock; and her brothers are: Dave of Garber and Otto Hansel of Edgewood. A brother Joey died in infancy.
In Memoriam:
A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled.
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.
God in His wisdom has recalled,
The boon His love has given.
And though the body slumbers here,
The soul is safe in Heaven.
