Elkader Register, Thur., 17 Oct. 1912.
John E. Corlett was born on the Isle of Man, July 04, 1827, and several years later he came with his family to America, settling in Duchess County, New York. Here in 1851 he married Catherine Crawford and five years later the young couple took the western trail and settled down near Farmersburg, Clayton County, in 1855. About twelve years ago they retired from the farm, coming to Elkader to live and here in 1906 Mrs. Corlett died and since that time Mr. Corlett resided with his children. For some time he has been at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. T. Lange, at Rolfe, Ia., and it was there in July of this year that old age began to demand the inevitable toll, gradually gaining on him until he was finally confined to his bed and for a month had been perceptibly failing until death came Sunday morning, Oct. 06th.
Mr. Corlett has a sister living at Barrytown, N.Y., and of his own immediate family of twelve, nine survive him. They are Horace, of Ames; Frank, of Farmersburg; James, of Seattle, Wash.; Willard, of Wichita Falls, Texas; Cyrus, of Corlett, Mont.; Leroy, of Oskaloosa; Mrs. Hallett, of Sterling, Ill.; Mrs. Hamilton, of Nora Springs, and Mrs. J. T. Lange, of Rolfe, Iowa. There are also twenty-six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral tok place Tuesday at Mr. Corlett's old home near Farmersburg. Rev. R. C. Lusk, an old time friend of the family, conducted the service and interment was at Giard cemetery.
Mr. Corlett was among the earliest settlers of this part of the county and identified himself with many of it's dominant interests. His death lessens the circle of pioneers who exerted the early influences in the development of the country and this part of the state, but until death also claims his many friends, the kindly memory of "Uncle John Corlett", as he was familiarly known, will still live.
