Elkader Register, Thur., 14 Feb. 1889.
On Friday last Coroner Cain was summoned to Giard station to hold an inquest over the remains of Thomas Maha, who had been killed on the rail road that afternoon. The particulars of the accident as near as can be learned are as follows: Maha in company with several other young men, of Giard township, had been attending a public sale near Giard, and in the afternoon caught on a north bound freight to secure a ride home. Observing a brakeman coming towards them, Maha started to get off the train, and while going down a ladder of a freight car, struck against one of the numerous bridges between Giard and Beulah, and was thrown against the cars, dashing out his brains. The coroner's jury after hearing the testimony in the case brought in a verdict in accordance with the above facts.
