Elkader Register, Thur., 17 Jan. 1889. From the McGregor Times, undated.
Sister Mary Claudia, as she was familiarly called, was known in secular life as Marcellina Hughes. She was born in Burlington, Iowa, in September, 1853, and consequently at the time of her death was in her thirty-sixth year. She entered the novitiate of the Sisters of Charity at Dubuque when eighteen years of age, and, after two years formation, was sent on her mission. She taught in various schools and academies in Chicago and elsewhere, her last mission before coming to McGregor being at Elkader. She had been superioress of the McGregor community for some four years. Her last hours were peaceful and happy, and amidst the tears and lamentations of her mother, her sister and the Sisters of Charity whom she had served so well and so faithfully during her term of office, she passed from earth to heaven after a well spent life that was rich in grace and blessing. The funeral services were held Friday morning at St. Mary's church, where solemn high mass was celebrated by Rev. Dr. Carroll. - McGregor Times.
