Elkader Register, Thur., 29 Nov. 1888.
On Thursday, Nov. 22d, at about 6:30 p.m., the spirit of Merl, only son of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Stanton, of Elkader, wearied with three weeks' struggle with disease, peacefully sank to rest. Had he lived until the 28th he would have been two years old. What memories of their little darling, and of those two eventful years, will be held by the parents, who(se) hearts are wrung as never before, by his loss. To them human sympathy, though abundant and kind, offers little consolation; to Him, must they turn, who said "Suffer little children to come to me, for such is the Kingdom of Heaven."
The funeral occurred Saturday afternoon, Rev. Mr. Cooley officiating, and was attended by numerous sympathizing friends, the remains being deposited in the East Side cemetery.
