Elkader Register, Thur., 26 Apr. 1888.
Another of our old pioneers has been called to his rest after many years of faithful service here below. Samuel Hawthorne died at his home in Volga City, at 7 o'clock p.m., Saturday, April 21st, 1888, at the age of 68 years, 1 month and 1 day. On the 17th he was kicked while hitching up a team, and after a short sickness he passed away. He located in Sperry township in the spring of 1854, buying a large farm, on which he lived and worked until 1873, when he sold out and moved to Volga City, where he resided continuously up to the time of his death. He leaves a wife, two sons, four daughters and a very large circle of friends to mourn his loss. He was a sincere Christian, having been a communicant of the United Presbyterian church for many years. As a citizen and neighbor he was liked by all and during his life was honored by election to many offices of trust in the township. His death will long be mourned by those who knew him best. The funeral occurred on Monday, Rev. S. P. Montgomery officiating, and was the largest held in this place for years, all coming out to pay their last respects to the departed friend and neighbor.
Although he sleeps, his memory doth live,
And cheering comfort to his mourners give.
He followed virtue as his truest guide;
Lived as a Christian, as a Christian died.
