Elkader Register, Thur., 22 Mar. 1888.
One of the most peculiarly distressing accidents that we have been called upon to chronicle for some time, occurred near Volga City, on Sunday evening.
On that day, Mr. Joseph Hoffman, a cream gatherer for White & Co., accompanied by his wife and a five months old babe paid a visit to the family of Francis Davis. While returning in the evening they were obliged to cross a creek near town. This creek had been swollen by the thaws, and as they attempted to cross, the wagon was upset, throwing all into the water. By hard work Mr. H. managed to rescue his wife, but the little babe was washed away to death, and at last accounts its body had not yet been found. Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman who are nearly crazed with grief at their loss, will have the heartfelt sympathies of all in their sad affliction.
