Elkader Register, Thur., 28 July 1887.
Near Clayton, on Thursday last, occurred the death by drowning of Charles Johnson, who resided on the island just above that place. He and his wife had been to Clayton, and while on their way home he went into the river to get a drink of water, he said, and was drowned. He had been drinking some, and whether he was unable to get out, or whether he intended to commit suicide, will never be known. Coroner Cain was down and held an inquest, the jury returning a verdict of "death by accidental drowning."
