Anna E. Schriver was born in Richland county, Wis., January 25, 1859, and moved with her parents to Kansas in early life. She came to Iowa and made her home for a short time n the family of Mr. Woodard near West Union. She was one of a family of seven children and the first to be taken. Mr. B.F. Schriver and Mrs. Thos. Allard, a brother and sister, reside in McGregor.

She was married to Charles W. Washburn, Jan. 23, 1877. Immediately afterward they went to live in the house which became their home for nearly forty-one years of devotion and happy experience of toil and care.

Seven children were born to them: Almer, the first born who died at five years of age; Herbert L., now of Savanna, Ill.; Alta R., Mrs. C.B. Chambers of Oelwein; Lloyd B. and Verne O. at home and Pearl V., Mrs. O.W. Taylor of Blue River, Wis.

Mrs. Washburn had suffered poor health for some years, the condition baffling the skill of physicians. She lived with the consciousness that the thread of life was brittle; that the day of the Lord would come "as a thief in the night" and it came [as] the family were anticipating the Thanksgiving season. She had only returned from her daughter's home at Blue River, Wis, Saturday evening. She had just said good bye to her daughter, Mrs. C.B. Chambers and her son's wife, Mrs. H.L. Washburn on Monday evening.

She was suddenly taken ill and passed to the beyond, Thursday morning, November 29, 1917, aged 58 years, 10 months and four days. All the children were able to be with her before she passed through the veil and were recognized and comforted with her blessing.

It was her comfort that the children were able to care for themselves. She was not leaving them in need of her care and counsel. Yet the memories of a mother who has given us life and watched over us in the tender years, given us so much counsel and Christian example, are the sweetest joys of today.

She was a member of the M.E. church of McGregor and had evidenced her faith in Christ by a life of beautiful devotion; was true to the divine motives within her and leaves a fragrance behind for those who loved her.

The children and their families named before, with the husband and father, and two grandchildren, John Washburn and Warren Harold Washburn, remain to remember most tenderly her life of loving devotion.

"We have brothers and sisters and multitudes of friends ... but only one mother.
I feel that in the heaven above the augies whispering to one another
Can know among their burning terms of love none so devotional as that of mother."

Funeral services were held from the late home on Sunday, December 2d, at 1 o'clock p.m., Rev. D.C.. Perry officiating. The interment was in Pleasant Grove cemetery.

Relatives from out of town who attended the funeral were: Geo. Schriver, a brother from Kansas City; Geo. and Walter Schriver of Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. H. Streeter of Fenninmore, Wis.; C.B. Chambers and wife of West Union, Mrs. Jess Washburn of Calmar; Mrs. Milton Wadsworth of Portage, Wis.; Miss Lovila West of Clermont; Miss Lilla Lang of Dubuque, Mrs. Charles Schriver of Minneapolis, Minn.

She has two sisters in California, also one brother in Florida, who were unable to attend the funeral.
