Clayton County Journal, 22 Dec. 1886. Highland column.

That terrible disease, diphtheria, which within the last few years has brought sorrow to so many homes, has entered the home of John Ericson, of this place, and where two weeks ago seven happy children played, only two remain. On Saturday, December 04th, Annie, aged nine years and the baby, both died within a few hours; Tuesday, Dec. 07th, little Bertha, aged 7, passed away; Thursday, Dec. 9th, little Carolina, aged three, joined her sisters in the better land and on Sunday, Dec. 12th, death again visited that grief stricken home and took little August, aged eleven years. The parents are almost frantic with grief. Those who have never passed through this terrible ordeal can little feel or know the deep sorrow and can it do any good, they have the sincere sympathy of the entire community.

Note: Burial in Highland Lutheran cemetery is presumed, but verification is needed
