Clayton County Register, Thur., 12 Mar. 1931.

The subject of this sketch, Charles W. Schulte, son of John H. Schulte and Mary A., nee Waterman, was born in Read township, Clayton County, Iowa, on January 31, 1860. He attended the home school, received his catechetical instruction in Garnavillo, where he was also confirmed. At this place he was united in marriage with Miss Louisa Tewes, On June 28, 1890. The couple went to housekeeping on the farm where the groom was born and raised, and where he had been working up to the time of his marriage. There, four children were born to them. For 25 years the farm was to be the home of the family. Then, after the two oldest sons, Harry and Lawrence, had married and had established homes of their own, Mr. and Mrs. Schulte and their two youngest children, Charlotte and Elmer, moved to Elkader. For five years they lived on the East Side, after which they purchased the George Lenth residence, which has been their home for the past eleven years.

Mr. Schulte enjoyed fairly good health, always finding something to occupy his time in and about the house, and with the work in the spacious garden. There he would often be seen in company with his little partner and pal, his grandchild, L'Louise, the sunshine of the home and family.

Two weeks ago he went to Dubuque to consult an eye specialist, and shortly after that to visit their daughter Charlotte, who was at the Finley hospital. Although afflicted with a cold and cough of late, it was not considered serious, until Friday evening, when a doctor was called, who soon discovered that the condition of the patient's heart and kidneys was most unfavorable, giving cause for alarm. Nothing was left undone to prolong his life, if possible, but it was soon noticed that he was failing fast. After being confined to his bed for just two days, he closed his eyes in the last sleep Sunday, March 08, 1931, at nine o'clock in the evening, having attained the age of 71 yeas, one month and seven days. His sudden and unexpected departure was a shock to loved ones and the community.

The passing of a loving husband and father is mourned by his faithful wife, and life's companion for more than forty years, three sons and one daughter: Harry W. of Colesburg, Iowa; Lawrence H., of St. Olaf, Iowa; Mrs. Charlotte A. M. Schulte Smith, and Elmer A. at home. He also leaves six grandchildren and four sisters: Mrs. Herman Diers of Lincoln, Nebr., Mrs. H. C. Schumacher of Garnavillo, Mrs. Charles A. Lantsky of Dubuque and Mrs. Fred W. Benjegerdes of Postville, other relatives and a host of friends, who will all miss him as a kind and ever obliging friend and neighbor.

He was affiliated with the Evangelical church in Elkader and for some years served as a member of the church council.

The most heartfelt and sincere sympathy of the community is with the family in their sudden and sore bereavement.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, March 11th, at the late home and in the Evangelical church with Rev. C. H. Franke officiating. Interment was made in the Garnavillo cemetery.
