Clayton County Register, Thur., 08 May 1930.
Hugh Armstrong Rizer was born Feb. 06, 1855, near Elkport, and departed this life April 28, 1930, at the age of 75 years, 2 months and 22 days. He was united in marriage to Mattie J. Hunter Aug. 29, 1880. To this union were born four children: Delbert Alton, Ralph P., Ray W., and one son, Harry, who died in infancy.
Hugh's parents came from Ohio to Iowa in 1852 and settled on a farm near Elkport. He had three sisters and six brothers, two brothers, Henry of Robinson, Ia., and Delbert G., of Lincoln, Nebr. are the only surviving members of this large family who with the three children, other relatives, and a host of friends are left to mourn his death.
Hugh, early in life united with the Methodist Episcopal church and since has been a devout and active member. On May 24, 1920, his beloved companion was taken by death, a loss which was heavy to bear and only his strong hope of meeting her in Heaven has sustained him. He died in the full triumph of a living: Paul's words to Timothy, so fittingly applies to this good man's life, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept Faith, hence forth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness." The funeral services were held Wednesday p.m. at the Wood M.E. church. A former pastor of Mr. Rizer, Rev. J. E. Witter, now of Milwaukee, Wis., delivered the sermon and was assisted by the local pastor, Rev. A. H. Meyer. Interment was made at the Asbury cemetery.
