Added by S. Ferrall 9/24/2022:

Mrs. Ellen Murphy-Kuempel, one of Guttenberg's highly esteemed residents, passed away suddenly at her home in this city on Saturday afternoon, December 28, 1929 at two o'clock, at the age of 65 years, 9 months and 26 days, the cause of her death being paralysis.

Mrs. Kuempel's health had been failing for for some time, when the Angel of Death called her to the Great Beyond, where there is no more suffering, but joy and happiness forever.

Deceased was born at Clayton, Iowa, a daughter of Patrick and Ann Murphy, on March 2, 1864, where she grew to womanhood. For many years she was successfully engaged in school teaching at various places.

On June 9, 1915, she was married at Waterloo to Mr. J.C. Kuempel, of Guttenberg, and since that time has been a resident of this town.

Mrs. Kuempel was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic church, St. Ann's Society and Rosary Society.

Mrs. Kuempel was admired by all. Her deeds were all of kindness and love, she was always ready to lend [a hand] to those in distress, and was a kind, loving and devoted wife. To do good in life was her aim at all times and in her death this community loses a most worthy resident and true Christian woman.

She is survived by her aged husband; two step-sons, Lee Kuempel of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Reuben Kuempel, of Guttenberg; a niece, Mrs. Edward Duphie, of Janesville, Wisconsin, and other relatives and friends. She will be sadly missed by all.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.A. Dupont at St. Mary's Catholic church in this city on Tuesday morning, December 31, 1929, at nine o'clock, after which the body was taken to Garnavillo and laid to rest in St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery there.

The funeral was largely attended, which showed that deceased was loved by all who knew her.
