DIED - At the house of William Reed, in McGregor on Sunday, Jan. 8th, Thomas Jefferson Shobert, aged about 50 years.
The deceased was an old soldier, having served under Col. Zack. Taylor while he was in command of Fort Crawford. He was an inoffensive man, unmarried, fond of telling stories of the early settlement of the country, too fond, we regret to say, of the liquid destroyer and not blessed with associations to influence him against it.
His disease was lung fever induced doubtless by dissipation and voluntary exposure.
Poor Tommy! You and your favorite dogs, friends to the last, will no more wander through our streets, but in the Record Above. It is our belief, that your errors innocent of harm to others, will all be blotted away while many purple [sic] and fine linen christians will fail to secure a home in bliss!

Notes:
-- Age & DOD given in the obituary are in conflict with his entry in the 1860 Mortality Schedule: Jefferson Shoebert, age 40, butcher, born Bohemia, died November of Lung Fever [Nov. 1859]-- If he was age 40 as in the Mortality Schedule, or 10 years older as indicated in the obit, he could have served at Ft. Crawford under Col.Taylor, although at age 40 in 1859, he would have been a very young soldier at the time. Zachary Taylor commanded the fort as a colonel between 1829 and 1837.
