Elkader Register, Thur., 09 Dec. 1920. Strawberry Point column.

The remains of John R. McDonald, aged 82 years and a veteran of the Civil War, a former resident of this place but for the past few years of Arlington, were brought here Monday morning for interment. He was married to Lucy Elizabeth Sisson at Manitowac, Wis., Oct. 21, 1857. In 1863 they moved to Jones County and settled on Boones Prairie where they resided until the spring of 1867 when they removed to Putnam township, Fayette County and settled on a farm which was their home for twenty years, then they retired from active farm work and moved to Strawberry Point. Mr. and Mrs. McDonald had no children of their own but they gave a home and raised three children, Frank and Harry and Fannie, now Mrs. Fannie Gilchrist of this place. Mrs. McDonald died August 1, 1897. After her death he was united in marriage to Mrs. Ruth Lamphere and they moved to Arlington where he has since made his home. After her death he was again united in marriage to Miss Lizzie Haering of this place. He was taken sick last Tuesday and gradually grew weaker and weaker until Death claimed him Saturday morning. Funeral services were held at the home in Arlington Sunday conducted by Rev. Reinbold and who with the soldier boys of the late war besides the relatives accompanied the remains here Monday morning for interment. He leaves his wife and foster children to mourn the loss of a dear one.
