Elkader Register, Thur., 08 Jan. 1920. Strawberry Point column.
The town was full of sadness Wednesday morning and many a heart was moved to tears as the bells of the German Lutheran Church tolled out their sad message announcing the death of Miss Rose Eder, oldest daughter of John Eder, who passed away in the Finley Hospital, at Dubuque, Tuesday evening. On Christmas night she was taken with an attack of appendicitis and hurried to the hospital in hopes that she might undergo an operation, but before reaching there the appendix broke. Everything that could be done for her was done, but to no avail. The remains accompanied by her father were brought home Wednesday. Rose, as she was known by everyone, was born near this place. She was baptized and confirmed in the church at St. Sebald. Several years ago the family moved from the farm to town and she has always remained at home. She was an earnest worker in the church and Luther League and always ready to do her part. She was a friend to everyone and when in trouble she would always try to cheer them. She will not only be missed by her father, sister and brother, but by the whole community. The funeral services were held in the Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. Fritschel, and a large number of relatives and friends gathered to pay their last respects to a dear friend. The flowers which covered her beautiful casket showed that she was held in high esteem by all. Five of her cousins acted as pallbearers. Besides her father, one sister, Mrs. Gusta Otterbeck, of this place, and one brother, Geo. Eder, of Wisconsin, she leaves hosts of relatives and friends to mourn her early death. Her remains were laid to rest in our beautiful cemetery.
