Register and Argus, 09 Dec. 1915. Farmersburg column.
Monday afternoon, at his home near Farmersburg, after suffering from ill health for some time, August Debes was called from this life to that Great Beyond. All that loved ones could do to ease his suffering and prolong his stay was done, but, in accordance with God's great wisdom, to no avail.
He was born May 4th, 1855, in Mardorf Kurhessen, Germany, and died November29th, 1915, at the age of 60 years, 6 months and 29 days.
At the age of nineteen years, he, with his mother, brother and sisters came to America and settled in Clayton county, near Froelich. His mother preceded him in death in 1903, his father having preceded him in early youth.
In young manhood he united with the Evangelical church, of which he remained a devoted worker until death came.
On August 30th, 1883, he was joined in marriage to Emma Klein, near Farmersburg, and in 1908 they had the privilege of celebrating their twenty-fifth anniversary. Three sons and four daughters came to bless this union, whom he cherished as only a father could.
The departed leaves to mourn his death his grief-stricken wife; Will, of Monona; Mrs. Alfred Kishman, of Luana; Mrs. Will Marfilius, of Farmersburg; Senda, Harry, Harvey and Lizzie at home; also two grandchildren: Glendor and Herbie Zurcher; three brothers; Jake and John, of Charles City, and Adam, of McGregor, and one sister, Mrs. Sam Melcher, also of Charles City, besides many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday forenoon at the Evangelical church, near Froelich, by Rev. E. G. Glaser, of Monona, who spoke in the German language, and Rev. Gauger, of Giard, who spoke in the English language. The remains were laid to rest in the Monona cemetery to await the Resurrection Morn.
