Register and Argus, 29 Apr. 1915.
Wm. Allert, one of the pioneers of Clayton County, passed away April 16th, 1915, at his home near Giard, Ia. He was born in Detwold, Lippe, Germany, Dec. 15, 1838.
The family emigrated to this country in the spring of 1856. It took the vessel nine weeks to make the voyage from Bremer Haven to New Orleans and it took ten days more on the Mississippi from New Orleans to St. Louis. The family consisted of nine persons, three members having emigrated some years before.
The deceased experienced the hardships of life from youth and was an industrious worker all his life. After staying near St. Louis for some time he came to Colesburg, Iowa, then went to Dubuque county, near Waupeton, where he bought a farm in 1871. Before this time he had worked for Henry Froelich, at Froelich, Iowa. He made the way on foot from Waupeton to Garnavillo and there inquired for work. Two places were mentioned, one of which was Mr. Froelich's. He decided for Froelich, which sounded best to him. Froelich in German meaning joyful. In 1877 he bought the old Jones farm, where he lived up to the time of his death.
With his industriousness was combined a cheerful disposition. He loved nature and could be found for hours at a time taking a stroll through the woods, listening to the rippling of the springs and singing of the birds. Birds were his friends and he always had a kind word for them.
In 1862 he was married to Caroline Borcherding, who lived only a few years. One daughter was born to them, now Mrs. F. W. Lange, of Froelich, Ia. In 1868 he was united in marriage to Minnie Rolves, who survives him. To this union were born two sons, Wm. and John, and one daughter, Emma, now Mrs. L. M. Yearous.
The deceased was a member of the Giard German Methodist Church and was active up to a few years ago, when his health began to fail.
The funeral services were conducted Sunday by Rev. A. W. Ganger. Interment in the Giard cemetery. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the community.
