Martin Smith was born in Hollingsburg, Blair county, Pa., Oct. 15th, 1829, and departed this life Feb. 27th, 1915, aged 85 years, 4 months and 12 days. He came to Dubuque county April 5th, 1851, and to Delaware county in the spring of 1859 and to the farm in Clayton county Feb. 25th, 1868, where he has since resided. He was united in marriage to Sarah Faust at Dyersville, Iowa, Jan. 1st, 1857, who preceded him in death on Feb. 13th, 1894. To this union seven children were born, four sons and three daughters, of which three sons and one daughter survive him. viz,; Chas. M., Jas. E., Margaret M., and John A., all residing near Colesburg. He is also survived by one brother, Jas. S. Smith, of Clinton, Iowa, and leaves eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church by Rev. Felter, of Colesburg, interment in the Page cemetery near Colesburg.
