Elkport Register, 24 Sept. 1885. Elkport column.

On Sunday morning, September 20th, our community was shocked by the report that John Hannaman, an old gentleman, living on the east side, had committed suicide. This proved to be a fact. It seems that on Sunday morning he got up at about six o'clock, built a fire and made preparations for breakfast, his wife being sick at the time. His son Henry arose shortly afterwards, and going to the barn for the purpose of feeding, was horrified to find his father dead, on his knees, with a rope around his neck. The old gentlemen must have fastened the rope to a joist, then around his neck and dropped himself, as an examination showed that his neck was broken. The cause is ascribed to temporary insanity, as he is said to have threatened suicide several times. He leaves a wife and family of grown-up children. His funeral took place on Tuesday of this week. Coroner Cain was summoned and held an inquest Sunday, and the jury returned a verdict in accordance with the above facts.
