Elkader Register, 17 June 1885.

DIED - At the home of his parents in Volga township, on Wednesday, June 10th, 1885, of membraneous diphtheria, Joseph Eberhard, aged 10 years. Deceased was a young man of good qualities, and was well liked by all who knew him. The funeral occurred on Thursday, June 11th, his remains being laid away to their final rest in the cemetery near Communia.

On Wednesday the 10th inst., the oldest son of Peter Eberhard, a young man 19 years old, died with diphtheria. This is the second death in Mr. Eberhard's family within a space of a few weeks. The family certainly are having more than their share of affliction, and have the sympathy of the entire community.

Note: Joseph s/o Peter & Leopaldine, was 14 y/o on the 1880 U.S. census, so the obit giving age 19 is the correct age at death. His brother Alfred died 5/27/1885.
