JOHN KAHRS

Funeral services were held last Saturday afternoon at two o’clock in the late home for John Kahrs and burial was made in the Mederville cemetery, Dr. F. E. Braucht of Elkader officiating.

Mr. Kahrs was born in Brooklyn, N. Y., September 26, 1847 and at the time of his death had reached the age of 91 years, four months and 13 days. He died Wednesday, February 8th, at 9:25 p. m.

He came to this county, from Brooklyn in 1878 and since that date Clayton county has been his home.

Mr. Kahrs enlisted in the regular army in 1866, serving three years fighting the Indians on the frontier. He was wounded in the thigh on Sept. 12, 1867 at the battle of Smoky River.

He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Albright of Cox Creek. To them were born seven children: Grover, Alfred, Henry, Ferdinand, Mrs. Carrie Elmer of San Diego, Mrs. Anna Blight of Chicago and Marie, who died several years ago. He also was the father of six children from a former marriage: Jack Kahrs of Waterloo, Mrs. Jas. Milady of Dubuque, Mrs. Mabel Rhinehart of Colorado, Mrs. Louise Burlson of Chicago and Mrs. Julia Christ and Mrs. Clara Hardy, the last two having preceded the father in death.
