Elkader Register, 27 May 1885. Elkport column.
On Sunday morning our community was shocked by hearing that Mr. C. Gilbert was dead. The old gentleman retired in usual health of Saturday evening, on Sunday morning at 4 o'clock his family was aroused by the unusual heavy breathing of Mr. Gilbert, and in a few moments thereafter he expired. He was unable to speak when discovered. It is supposed that the cause of his death was heart disease. Mr. Gilbert came here about three years ago, and built the creamery which he has operated ever since. During his stay he built up this institution much to the advantage of the town and surrounding country and built up a reputation of honesty and good business qualification. His death will be universally deplored. He will be buried on Wednesday.

The funeral of Calvin Gilbert came off on Wednesday of last week, and was the largest one ever witnessed here. He was buried with Masonic orders by Constellation lodge of Colesburg, Bro. Averitt acting as Master, assisted by Rev. McNamee. The large number attending the funeral was an evidence of the popularity Mr. Gilbert enjoyed.
