Elkader Register, 01 Apr. 1885.

DIED - At Garnavillo, Sunday morning, March 29th, Mrs. Maria Harberg. The death of Mother Harberg has long been expected, as she has been a sufferer for several months. Mrs. Harberg was born in Gross Loersch, Mecklenberg Schwerin, Germany, on Sept. 19th, 1823, and was therefore 63 years, 6 months and 10 days old at the time of her death. She emigrated to Garnavillo in 1854, and was here married to John Harberg. Her husband, who died in 1879, was the founder of the business now so successfully conducted by Messrs. Harberg & Luehsen. She was a faithful wife, one who, by her good counsel, her patience in time of trouble, her indomitable energy and timeless industry, enabled her husband to establish a large and lucrative business, notwithstanding the fiery fiend twice destroyed the fruits of years of toil. She leaves three sons, who are among our most successful business men, and who owe their success in life to her teachings. Fred, who is engaged in the manufacture of wagons, Louis F., who is senior partner of the firm of Harberg & Luehsen, and John H., who is traveling for an extensive hardware house of Omaha, Neb. Mrs. Harberg was a Christian in the truest sense of the word, one in whom the Christian graces, patience, charity and benevolence were united. Always ready to comfort the afflicted, relieve the distressed, and to pour the balm of sympathy into the saddened heart, she leaves behind her a host of mourning friends. Her remains were accompanied to the grave by a large concourse of our citizens. The services for the dead were appropriately conducted by the Rev. F. Sommerlad. May she rest in peace.
