Elkader Register, 14 Jan. 1885. Garnavillo column.

On Thursday morning our people were appalled by the announcement that our esteemed citizen, William Brumm was dead. The sad news was the more astonishing, as he had been seen on our streets the previous day, engaged in his usual vocation. He retired at his usual hour in apparent good health, but soon complained of restlessness. He did not think it was necessary that medical aid should be called, and quieted the fears of his family by saying it would soon be better. Getting no relief, medical aid was called, but notwithstanding all their skill, death soon ended his suffering. He died at three o'clock. The cause of his sudden death was paralysis of the heart. Wilhelm Brumm was born in Nackel, province of Posen, Prussia, on March 2nd, 1822, and was therefore nearly 63 years of age at the time of his death. He left his native country in 1852, a young man with little capital, but full of hope and an earnest desire to become independent. He first settled in Jefferson township, in this county, and by tireless industry and earnest frugality he soon became owner of a farm, on which the greater portion of his life in this country was passed. In 1875 he disposed of his farm, and purchased the Garnavillo hotel, of which he has been up to within a short time the genial host. He was a public spirited man, and took great interest in the welfare of his town. The many buildings which he erected, and especially the Garnavillo hotel, are fit monuments of his enterprise and skill. Unrestricted by religious bias, he was a man of broad and liberal views. He considered mankind a common brotherhood, and thought it his duty to do good to all. His charity was unostentious but fervid, and no needy one was ever turned uncomforted from his door. Scrupulously honest and upright in his own dealings, he placed implicit confidence in human nature, and although often the victim of his less scrupulous fellow creatures, his benevolent heart did not admit of misanthropic propensities. An earnest democrat, he despised cant and hypocracy in all political parties. He always cast his ballot and influence for honesty and reform. He leaves a disconsolate widow to whom he was for 36 years a faithful, considerate husband, six children, for whose future welfare he ever strove, and 16 grandchildren, who will ever cherish him as one whose example is worthy of their imitation. He was buried on Saturday, January 10th, at Garnavillo, under the auspices of Guttenberg Lodge, No. 127, I.O.O.F. (of which he was for 22 years a worthy brother.) assisted by America Lodge, No. 67, of Guttenberg, and Garnavillo Lodge, No. _. The remains were conveyed to the German Lutheran church, followed by a large concourse of friends. The Rev. F. Sommerlad preached an impressive sermon, after which the remains were conveyed to the cemetery. D.D.G.M. James Schroeder, of Guttenberg Lodge, conducted the beautiful ceremony, prescribed by the laws of the order, at the grave, and pronounced an able eulogy on our departed brother. The best epitaph that can adorn his tomb is:

"Here lies the noblest work of God,
An honest man."

Requiescat in Pace.

Jacques.
