Elkader Register, 24 Sept. 1884.

Yesterday morning, just as the bells were ringing out the hour of six o'clock, the spirit of our young friend Matthew Mullen, was released from his earthly body; just at the dawn of a new day, he closed his eyes on this world, and passed into a new life in the great beyond. For a number of weeks he has been suffering greatly from consumption, in fact ever since he returned from the west, until death came and relieved him from the pains of this earth.

He was born in Janesville, Wis., in January, 1863, and was consequently a little over 21 years of age at the time of his death. He came to Elkader with his parents about 15 years ago, and was universally liked and respected by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

The funeral will occur this afternoon at 2 o'clock, his remains being laid away in the Catholic cemetery.
