Elkader Register, 10 Sept. 1884.
On Monday last Coroner Cain received telegraphic summons from Guttenberg, to come to that place and hold an inquest, and in response went there, and found that Mathias Weiner, one of the early settlers of this county, had wearied of the cares of the world, and had taken the revolver route to the grave. The coroner on his arrival found the body half across the doorway of a room in his own residence, surrounded by pools of blood, and a small round hole in his right temple showed from whence the life stream had flowed, and told, only too true, the sad story of the ending of a long and useful life.
Mrs. Louise Weiner being sworn says: He was born in Germany and is 58 years old; he has been in this country for 30 years.
(Note: There is a detailed account of the deed, inquest and verdict in this paper and date that was not transcribed here, it lending no further information of genealogy value.)
