Elkader Register, Fri., 25 Apr. 1884.
From the Merrill, Wis., News, of the 18th, we glean the following in regard to the death of Mr. James Gibson, briefly noticed in our issue of Tuesday:
Died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Joseph Downey, Mr. James Gibson, father of Officer Gibson, aged 64 years, one month and four days, Thursday, April 17, at twenty minutes past three in the afternoon, of pneumonia. His sons, Frank and George, took the remains to Garnavillo, Iowa, for interment. Mr. Gibson was born in County West Maid, Ireland, March 13, 1820. In 1843 he came to this country, living in Hartford, Conn., for 6 years. Since then he has lived in the west. Mr. Gibson has been but a short time in Merrill, but during that time he had gained hosts of friends - in fact he had nothing but friends. Everybody respected him; everybody will mourn him. His sickness was very short, his death painless. In the morning his daughter told him God would soon relieve him. His answer was, "I am ready to die." These were his last words. His sorrowing children have our sympathy.
Some parties having stated that Mr. Gibson did not have the services of a priest, we are authorized to state that it is a mistake that Rev. Father Richards performed the last rites of the church, and that services were also held in the Garnavillo church.
