Elkader Register, Fri., 04 Apr. 1884.
On Tuesday evening of this week occurred the death of Royce, brother of Dr. S. A. Bass, at the latter's home in this place, of consumption, at the age of 35 years. Deceased was a native of Vermont, where he resided all his life, until about a year ago, when he was attacked by the disease which finally ended his life. On its first approach he went to California, in hopes that a change of climate would prove beneficial, but his hopes were groundless, and he failed fast and about two months ago resolved to return to the Vermont home, to die on his native soil. He stopped here for a visit with his brother's family and to rest, but the grim destroyer had made such inroads on his health that he was unable to proceed farther. His mother and father arrived here last week, and were present during his last hours on earth.
Deceased was educated for a journalist, and for some time followed his chosen profession, and bid fair to advance to the front ranks, when he was compelled to abandon it. He was married in California in December last to a lady from Vermont, who is left to mourn the loss of a dear companion. His remains were taken to West Randolph, Vt., Wednesday, and were accompanied by his father and mother, and his wife.
