Elkader Register, Thur., 08 July 1880,

DIED - At her home in Garnavillo township, on Saturday, July 3rd, of consumption, Louisa, wife of Helmuth Brandt, aged 42 years.

Again has the angel of death swooped down upon the home of one of our old and respected citizens and taken from him the treasure of his household, and turned that home into a house of mourning, where joy and peace had reigned supreme but a short time since. "Such is life in its sterner aspects."

Mrs. Brandt was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Aulwes, and was born in Germany in 1938, and at the age of three years emigrated with her parents to the United States, settling in Ohio, near Cincinnati. In 1859 she was married at Cincinnati, to John Aulwes, and by him had four children, two boys and two girls. Mr. Aulwes dying in 1868, she was married to Helmuth Brandt in 1869. By Mr. Brandt she had five children. Of her children but five are living, most of them nearly grown up.

For some time past she has been afflicted with that terrible disease which finally caused her death, but during her long illness, she bore all her sufferings with christian fortitude and resignation. She was loved by all, and her death is greatly mourned, while the afflicted husband and family have the deepest sympathy of all in their great and irreparable loss.

The funeral occurred on Monday, from the family residence near Garnavillo, and was attended by a number of the lodges of which Mr. Brandt is a member, and numerous friends and relatives from all parts of the county. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Fruechtenicht, of Garnavillo, and the remains laid in their narrow home in the cemetery at that place. May she sleep the sleep of the blessed, and in the end receive the reward of the righteous.
