DIED - At McGregor on Monday, August 1st, at 2 o'clock, Ferdinand Durand, aged 45 years and 8 months.

The deceased was born in Hamilton, Canada, and emigrated to Wisconsin many years ago - hence to McGregor in 1850. His death was caused by a wound received by him in 1857 in a street encounter with a Mr. Frink who had formerly been his mercantile clerk. An artery was severed in the thigh of the deceased and it was not taken up and properly secured.

A neglect of two years produced disease of the limb which ultimated in mortification about two weeks since. Dr. Winer of Chicago was sent for and on Saturday last the leg was taken off near the body. The reduced state of the patient forbade a rally of the system and he gradually sunk until Monday when his spirit departed.

In a long and somewhat intimate intercourse with Mr. Durand we always found him an honorable man. He leaves a widow and an interesting family of young children to mourn the loss of a kind husband and a most affectionate father. May God shield them from the storms of life.
