Elkader Register, Thur., 12 June 1890.
On Sunday evening last about 10 o'clock John Engle, aged about twenty-one years, whose parents reside near Clayton Center, and who had been working for Judge O. W. Crary, of Read township, went into the barn on the latter's premises and committed suicide by shooting himself in the forehead. The weapon used was a thirty-two calibre revolver. As soon as he was discovered Dr. Fuller, of this place, was summoned, but before his arrival the young man had died.
The young man had complained of severe pains in his head since Friday last, but nothing unusual was noted in his actions until Sunday when he went to his brother and demanded some money, saying he wanted to go west immediately as he had struck Mr. Crary's son and was afraid someone would kill him for it. As he had not struck anyone, his actions can only be accounted for on the ground of temporary insanity.
Coroner Kriebs held an inquest on Monday and the jury, consisting of George Pahlas, George Beyer and J. G. Laxson returned a verdict of "suicide while temporarily insane."
