We were pained to learn that George Sigg, one of Garnavillo's oldest settlers had passed away Monday morning. Although his friends have been expecting his demise almost daily the shock was great when the sad intelligence reached us. The funeral took place Wednesday under the auspices of the A.F. & A.M. lodge.

Elkader Register, Thur., 14 July 1898. Garnavillo column.
Garnavillo has lost another of her old citizens in the death of George Sigg, Sr., who after a long and painful illness passed away last Monday. Mr. Sigg had been in poor health for several years past, but especially so this spring, when stomach complications set in, and finally the end came.
Mr. Sigg was born in Bragen, Komgreich Wurtenberg, Germany, on April 16, 1822. Here he grew to manhood, and in May 1852 was married to Maria Deuringer, a native of Laubeck, Tyrol. Later they came to America first settling at Chicago, afterward at Dubuque. After leaving Dubuque they took charge of the Clayton County poor farm and insane asylum, and rendered faithful service in that capacity. From there the family came to Garnavillo, where they have resided ever since and where the children were reared to manhood and womanhood.
Mr. and Mrs. Sigg were blessed with five children, as follows: Joseph Sigg, now of Lincoln, Neb.; Mrs. Anna Burmeister, of Adair, Iowa; Mrs. Bertha Brum, of this place; Mrs. Mary Maurer, of Bellview, Iowa; and George Sigg, now of Nashua, Iowa.
Mr. Sigg was a member of the A.F. & A.M. fraternity under whose auspices he was laid to rest, on Wednesday, July 13. Many brethern from Guttenberg, Clayton, McGregor, Elkader and Farmersburg, attended the funeral, and their numbers were a silent witness to the respect and honor in which he was held by those who knew him. Rev. F. Sommerlad offered appropriate remarks over the remains, and by his words impressed the fact upon all that heard that although death is awful, from one view, it can be made a thing of joy.
To the widowed mother and the whole family we offer our sincere sympathy in this hour of bereavement.
