Elkader Register, Thur., 07 Apr. 1898. Garnavillo column.

Mr. William Krueger, one of our most prominent citizens, died at his home 3 miles north of town on Saturday last. For several months he had been suffering from a cancer of the stomach, which slowly but surely brought Mr. Krueger to the grave. It is a peculiar coincidence that his wife died last year, on the same day before Palm Sunday as Mr. Krueger, and was buried on the same day, Tuesday, after Palm Sunday. For both, the flowers which were used to decorate the church for the examination of the confirmation class served to lend their sweet fragrance as a tribute to the dead.

Mr. William Krueger was born in Westphalia, Prussia, on August 21, 1828. In 1850 at the age of 22, he came to America, settling on a farm in Jefferson twp., where he resided for many years. On Feb. 14, 1862, he married Katherine Maria Heye, who preceded him in death not quite a year, passing away on April 10, 1897. A family of eight children, five of whom still survive, was the result of this union, those still living being, Paul, Henry, Louis, Augusta and Minnie.

In 1870 Mr. Krueger became interested in the milling business, and in company with his brother E. H. Krueger and Caspar Werges, erected a large brick mill at Clayton City. The History of Clayton County says, "In 1870, Krueger & Co., built a large four story mill, 60 x 120 feet, at a cost of $75,000. They did a large and lucrative business until the failure of the wheat crop, in 1876, when they closed the mill, and it has not been in operation since. They manufactured the finest flour and their failure was a great loss to the manufacturing interests of the township."

After the failure of the mill, Mr. Krueger and his family removed to the farm of his wife, 3 miles north of Garnavillo on which place they have since resided., and where their children have been reared to manhood and womanhood.

Mr. Krueger has been for many years a member of the Masonic fraternity, under whose auspices his remains were laid to rest by the side of his wife on Tuesday last. Rev. F. Sommerlad delivered a touching address, and pointed out to the mourning children the one source of consolation in times of trouble. They have lost a loving, gentle father, and only a short time ago, their dear mother, and the way of life may seem dark to them. But their many friends, whose endeavors to make the sorrow less keen are being exerted to the utmost, join in the heartfelt sympathies, and show where comfort alone can come. May He sustain them in this bereavement.
