Elkader Register, Fri., 14 Aug. 1896.

Again we are obliged to record the departure of one of our most respected and beloved fellow citizens, Henry Froelich, who died at his oldest daughter's home, Mrs. John S. Bickel at Froelich, Iowa, Aug. 6th, 1896. Father Froelich was one of our oldest settlers, coming to this township in 1847. He was born Sept. 6th, 1812, at Bassfeld, Kreis. Hamberg, Kubressen, Germany.

In 1845 he came to America the first time, but after a short stop at Cincinnati, Ohio, and Giard, Iowa, he returned to Germany, but in 1847 he came back again and settled near Froelich, which town was named after him.

In 1848 Mr. Froelich took unto himself, as his wife, Miss Katharine Guthell, with whom he lived happily until July, 1867 when death took her from him and since then he kept house with his children until the last 10 or 12 years which he spent with his daughter, Mrs. J. S. Bickel.

He was ill for a few weeks though no special pain yet a strong desire to depart and be with Jesus, whom he loved and served since 1847, at which time he joined the German M.E. church and honestly and faithfully lived what he professed.

A few days before his death he had the pleasure of seeing all his children gathered around his bed and partake with him the holy sacrament, it was a blessed moment.

To the last he with clear and loving word testified to the cleansing power of the Blood of Jesus, praising God for his saving grace and power.

All that loving hands and hearts could do was done for him by his children and friends until death delivered him of this earthly tabernacle and his soul went to glory.

Five sons and four daughters, one sister, 23 grandchildren and scores of relatives and friends mourn his departure, but not as such who have no hope.

His funeral was very largely attended. Rev. W. V. Schlung preached the funeral sermon from the words Father Froelich chose as his text: 2 Cor. 5-1-10, "We have lost an honest, upright, loving father and citizen but our loss is his gain."
