Elkader Register, Fri., 06 Mar. 1896.
Our community was not a little startled Monday last when it was known that at dawn of day the soul of Mrs. Martin Mullen had departed to the great beyond. Having been seriously ill but a short time few realized that the end was so near. Mary Carroll was born in Ireland about 1826, and came to America in 1846, locating in New York. Here she was united in marriage to Martin Mullen. In 1852 they came to this county and settled on the farm in Sperry twp., where they resided until a few years ago they came to Elkader. The husband and one sister, Mrs. Robt. Quinn, of Elkader, with nephews and nieces and other friends sincerely mourn her departure. Our sympathy goes out to the husband, who having retired to enjoy the peace and quiet of hard earned competence, now finds himself suddenly bereft of the companion of his toil, one who has been with him for Weal or woe all these years. May he be comforted with the thought that there will be a joyful re-union in the better land.
The funeral was held Wednesday morning at St. Joseph's church. Rev. Father Reilley, being assisted in the solemn service by Fathers O'Donnelly of McGregor, and Hogan, of Monona.
