Former Clayton County Resident Dies at Muscatine.
On Friday evening at 9:30 o’clock at the Lutheran Old Folks Home at Muscatine occurred the death of Joachim Schaal the cause of his death being old age and a complication of deseases [sic]. Deceased was born at Grabau, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, on Feb. 13, 1835 and therefore was 79 years and 3 weeks of age at the time of his death. In the year 1869 he was married in Germany to Miss Elizabeth Jahnke who preceded him in death in the year 1870. In 1871 he was again united in marriage in Germany to Miss Frederike Timm. In 1874 he came with his family to America, settling at first at Osterdock, Clayton County, Iowa. Later he came to Jefferson township and engaged in farming for many years. His second wife preceded him in death in the year 1902. In the year 1908 he went to the Lutheran Old Folks Home where he spent the remainder of his life. He was a kind and true man, and his death is deeply mourned by one daughter, Mrs. Henry Dannenbrink [sic], of Cedar Creek, one step-son, Carl Schaal of Jefferson township, and a large circle of relatives and friends. The remains were brought and accompanied to Guttenberg by Rev. Reinnemund, of Muscatine, Monday and were then taken to Ceres for interment the same day. Rev. Reinnemund of Muscatine and Rev. Bosholm, of Garnavillo, officiated at the funeral.
