Mabel Martins

Funeral services for Mabel Elizabeth Martins, 71, were held Saturday, Jan. 17, 1981 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. The Rev. Julius L. Peterson and the Rev. David R. Nelson officiated. Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Mabel Martins, daughter of Albert and Elizabeth (Schmidt) Schlitter, was born Sept. 7, 1909 in Linton Township, Allamakee County, Iowa. She died Jan. 14 at the Community Memorial Hospital, Postville.

She was baptized in the Evangelical faith, Feb. 20, 1910 at her home. She received her education at the Figgie School No. 3 in Linton Township.

Oct. 7, 1931 she was married to Gerwin Martins at the home of her parents. They farmed in Clayton County. She joined St. John Lutheran Church at Luana and was a member of the Ladies Aid for a number of years and also a member of the Grand Meadow Home Garden Club. Upon retirement in 1955, they moved to Postville and became members of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents; a son, Carlton; two brothers, Leslie and Milton; and a sister, Mrs. Grover (Hazel) Timmerman.

Surviving are her husband; four daughters, Mrs. Roger (Mary Jane) Russett and Mrs. Daryl (Norma) Sander, both of Postville; Mrs. Harry (Lucille) Griffiths of Raleigh, N. C.; and Mrs. Darold (Anna) Lamphier, Washburn, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carlton Schlitter of Monona; and Willis Schlitter of Waukon, Iowa.
