On New Years Day, 1895, just at evening, 0ccurred the death of one of our early settlers, Mrs. Roena Reddick, who was probably the oldest resident of Clayton County. After a long life, with its varied changes, joys and sorrows, she sank to rest at the age of 90 years, 11 months. For a number of years she has been in feeble health and was lovingly cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Feay, with whom she lived. The funeral services, conducted by Rev. L. S. Cooley, of the Methodist church, were held Thursday at the home, three miles south of town, and the remains were laid to rest in the Cox Creek cemetery. Roena Chapman was born in Jefferson County, New York, Feb. 1st, 1804, and was the oldest of a family of 15 children, the parents being pioneers in the early settling of that state. She was united in marriage to Henry Truman March 30, 1819, in York state. They moved to Ohio in 1833, locating in Medina County. To them were born twelve children, nine of whom are living, two girls and one boy having passed to the other shore years ago. She was bereaved of her husband May 7th, 1850, and in 1857 she, with her family, moved to Clayton County, Iowa, which has ever since been her home. She was married to David Reddick, of Wager twp., in 1858, who died in November, 1861, leaving her a widow a second time. Mrs. Reddick was of strong constitution, energetic and industrious disposition, with qualities needed to battle with the trials and hardships of pioneer life. Being of an independent nature, which characterizes many old people who have always worked and who do not like to be waited upon, she did her own work and cared for her own rooms until about five years ago, when failing strength would not permit this longer. She retained her faculties of mind up to within a few months of her death. She took to her bed a number of weeks ago, and it became evident that the end could not be far off. She was faithfully watched and cared for by her children; her daughter, Mrs. Ross, of Nebraska, has been with her for about six months, and on the evening of the first day of the year Mrs. Reddick's soul departed to the home above. She leaves one sister, Mrs. Adeline Kinney, of Custon, Ohio, and one brother, J. D. Chapman, of this place, and nine children to mourn her departure. The oldest child, Mrs. Emily King, of Lodomillo twp., is 73 years of age. There are three sons in Oklahoma and five daughters and one son in Clayton County. Forty grandchildren will ever remember her, and there are also 71 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

An article in this issue of the newspaper notes a mistake in the obituary of Rowena Reddick which appeared a week earlier. That mistake being that David Reddick died in 1864.
