Elkader Register, Thur., 07 Dec. 1893. Garnavillo column.
Died, at the home of his son, on Thursday, Nov. 30, John Friederich Gerhard Hedeman, at the advanced age of 83 years, 3 months and 4 days. Mr. Hedeman was born in Zwishenahn, Oldenberg, Germany, Aug. 26, 1810. In 1831 he emigrated to the United States and settled on a farm in Illinois where he remained 8 years. He then returned to Germany and married Helena Bruhns, with whom he lived for over a half century. In 1853 he came to Iowa and settled on the farm which has been his home ever since. Of his six children five are living, namely; Mrs. Herman Pieper, Mrs. Wm. Meyer, Mrs. Geo. Tangeman, Chas. G. and Fred. Twenty-four grandchildren also mourn his loss. Mr. Hedeman was a man of great and good qualities. An active member of our church, he made it his duty to attend worship even when the feebleness of old age made the task difficult. He had seen much of life's troubles, but in all his long pilgrimage he kept full faith in his God. His remains were buried in the new cemetery on Sunday. May he rest in peace.
