Elkader Register, Thur., 12 Oct. 1893.
At the old homestead in Highland twp., on Thursday Oct. 5, occurred the death of Patrick Malary, at the age of 73 years. He was stricken down without warning with what is supposed to have been heart disease. Mr. Malary was born Aug. 20, 1820, in county Roscommon, Ireland, and in 1847 came to the United States, and after working in New York and Kentucky in 1854 he came to Clayton County and entered the farm in Highland; after working in Illinois and Kentucky returned to this county in 1857. In the spring of 1859 he was married to Mary Welch, who, with one son, John, and a daughter, Mrs. Catherine Lannon survive him. Patrick Malary was an honest, upright man and his sudden demise has cast a gloom over the hearts of his many friends, he having been numbered among the first settlers of the township. The funeral on Saturday last was held at St. Joseph's church, the solemn services being conducted by Rev. Father Reilly, and was attended by one of the largest processions we have ever seen, who came to pay this last sad respect to an honored fiend and neighbor. Peace be with him.
