Elkader Register, Thur., 14 Sept. 1893. St. Olaf column.
Our people were shocked last Saturday by the sudden death of Rudolph Engelhardt. The threshers were at the place, and after breakfast he went to work and laughed and joked with the men. At about 8 o'clock a.m. he complained of not feeling well and going where his brother Charley was at work laid down on the sacks. After a time Charley suggested that he should go home and take some medicine, when he looked up and said: "Charley, I am past that now." Charley at once got him into a wagon and sent him home, at the same time sending for Dr. White, of Elkader. At about 11 a.m., Mr. Engelhardt died without a struggle. Drs. White, of Elkader, and Miller, of Dubuque, arrived at 3 o'clock and from examination it was believed that the cause of death was the rupture of a blood vessel at the base of the brain. Rudolph Engelhardt was born near Anklum, Germany, Aug. 31st, 1841, coming to America in July 1862, he resided at Garnavillo one year, and in 1863 he moved on the place near St. Olaf, where he lived and prospered for thirty years. In 1867 he married Miss Mary Smith, who with eleven children - six girls and five boys - survive him, with his father, three sisters and three brothers. The funeral was held Monday at Clayton Center, Rev. F. W. Seifert officiating, and was largely attended by sympathizing friends of the family, the procession numbering over fifty-seven teams.
