Elkader Register, Thur., 16 Mar. 1893. Garnavillo column.
Our community was appalled last week by the news that Mr. J. H. Moellering had fallen dead at his home on Monday evening. Mr. Moellering had been in the best of health for the past few years. He complained of a slight pain in the left breast, but otherwise was in the best spirits. He walked about the house and yard as was his custom, on Monday afternoon about 5 o'clock, his grandchild who returned from school brought him the mail. He opened his mail and glanced at the papers. He then went to recline on his couch to read, and while lying down was suddenly overcome and died without a struggle. He was born July 8, 1818, in Sprenge, Whestphalen, Prussia, Germany. In 1841 he was married to Margareth Petering, his surviving widow. In 1846 he and his family came to the United States, first settling in St. Louis. In the following spring they came to Clayton County and settled on a farm in Jefferson township. In 18_4 he bought the homestead now occupied by his son Wm. and has lived on it ever since. Mr. Moellering was one of our most respected citizens, and was frequently elected to offices of trust, all of which he administered with faithfulness and ability. He was one of the founders of St. Paul's church of this place and took great interest in its welfare. He was a man of liberal and broad views, a kind friend, a model citizen and an excellent father. Of his children the following survive him: Mrs. Louis Meyer, Mrs. F. H. Burns, H. H. Moellering, Wm. Moellering and Mrs. H. Mohrning, all of whom were present to pay the last sad tribute to the departed. The funeral occurred on Tuesday. An immense number of friends participated. Rev. Dickhoff gave an excellent sermon at St. Paul's. The remains were buried in the new cemetery. May he rest in peace.
