Elkader Register, Thur., 05 Jan. 1893.
At his residence in Giard twp. on Jan. 2d, 1893, occurred the death of Phillip Walter, at the age of 82 years. The subject of this sketch was born in Germany, Nov. 2d 1810, and in 1838 he emigrated to America. After living in Indiana ten years he came to Clayton county settling on Roberts creek in Wagner twp., where in 1871 he expended a large sum of money in the erection of a large flour mill. In 1835, before coming to America he was married to Barbara Walter, by whom he had ten children, some of whom have passed to the world beyond. Mrs. Walter died in 1879, and in 1882 Mr. Walter was united in marriage to Mrs. Marde Eible, of Giard twp., where he has for several years resided. Deceased was a highly respected citizen, and his many friends will regret to learn that so early in the new year has another of the sturdy band of pioneer been called from his labor among us.
