Elkader Register, Thur., 25 Oct. 1894.
Mary Jane Scovel, who died at Elkader Oct. 19th was born in Fulton County, Ill., in 1836. She came with her parents to Clayton County, Iowa, in 1849, and was married to Isaac N. Pratt in Clayton County, on Nov. 1st, 1863, by Elder Moore. Seven children were born to them, four boys and three girls, five of whom preceded her to the better land. She leaves one son, Chas. N. Pratt, one daughter, Lottie A. Pratt, one step-daughter, Mrs. Wm. Carpenter, an aged mother, two sisters and six brothers, besides many friends, to mourn her loss. She united with the U.B. church at the age of 24 and maintained that belief throughout her life. She was a patient sufferer. Although she could not speak, she was conscious to the last, and seemed to smile till the last breath left her.
The funeral was held from her late residence on Saturday last, Rev. L. G. Cooley officiating, the interment being by the side of her husband in the Cox Creek cemetery.
