Elkader Register, Thur., 17 May 1894.

Friday evening, May 11th, after an illness of about two weeks in which he suffered considerable pain, James Varley expired at his residence in Elkader. The deceased was born May 6, 1816, at Wheeling, W. Va. On June 8, 1836, he married Margaret Sleter, by who he had twelve children, six of whom survive. After living for a time in Indiana, Mr. and Mrs. Varley came to Boardman twp., some forty years ago, and settled upon the farm where he resided until he came to Elkader, some six years since. In August, 1869, his wife died and he afterwards married Antoninette Shippie, who with one daughter born to Mr. Varley, survives him.

Although the writer's acquaintance with the deceased has been short yet we have found him to be an upright, honest man, charitable to those in need and ever on the watch to do a kind deed to a neighbor. Always industrious, he seemed to forget that old age and disease was creeping on apace, and this last brought him low. By his death his family is bereft of an affectionate husband and father, the neighborhood of an obliging neighbor and the county of a valued citizen.

The funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon from Mr. Varley's late residence, being conducted by Rev. Mr. Lusk and attended by a number of sorrowing friends of the family. The interment was in the East Side cemetery.
