At the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Becker, on Thursday, Dec. 28th, 1893, Mrs. Matthias Stemmer departed this life after an illness extending over several months.

Barbara Heid was born in Zellingen, Baden, and was married to Matthias Stemmer in 1834. In 1860 they came to America, and settled at Communia. Eleven children were born to them, five of whom, with the father, preceded her to the golden shore. She leaves six children, thirty grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren. Those of the children who survive her are: J. C. Stemmer, Mrs. John Becker, Mrs. G. Wertley, of Elkader; Mrs. Krauz, of Cox Creek, Mrs. Wentz, of Communia, and Mrs. Mall of Belle Plain, Benton County.

The funeral services were held at the M.E. church Saturday afternoon, Rev. F. W. Seifert, of Clayton Center, and Rev. Mr. Fuchs officiating, and were largely attended by the old neighbors and friends of the family. The interment was in the East Side cemetery.
